Dallas Cowboys

More right than wrong for the Cowboys, and a B to prove it.

The Cowboys went off the board in a big way for Curtis Jacobs, 46 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. No fireworks, but a solid B.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. Landing Wilson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.24 · Pick 56 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 76
Value said wait; Christian Haynes in pick No. 56 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.16 · Pick 80 · Matt Goncalves · OT · rank 106
This one needs a full-page explanation: Matt Goncalves in Round 3, Pick 16, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 68
Taking Payton Wilson in the 87th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Edefuan Ulofoshio · LB · rank 156
A wild overpay on Edefuan Ulofoshio in No. 125, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Kamal Hadden · CB · rank 138
They paid up for Kamal Hadden at slot 129 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Curtis Jacobs · LB · rank 179
They reached into another round for Curtis Jacobs, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.12 · Pick 148 · Cedric Johnson · DE-EDGE · rank 160
The board had cheaper options than Cedric Johnson at the Round 5 slot, and it noticed. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R5.22 · Pick 158 · Grayson Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 168
A conviction pick on Grayson Murphy at Round 5, Pick 22 that the board grades a round light. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
R5.28 · Pick 164 · Jordan Jefferson · DT · rank 181
Jordan Jefferson in pick No. 164 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Aki Ogunbiyi · OG · rank 192
Aki Ogunbiyi at the 173rd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.38 · Pick 213 · Dylan McMahon · C · rank 243
They talked themselves into Dylan McMahon at slot 213, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.6 · Pick 226 · Nathaniel Watson · LB · rank 240
Nathaniel Watson in the 226th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.22 · Pick 242 · Donell Harris Jr. · DL-EDGE · rank 264
Donell Harris Jr. at pick 242 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R7.30 · Pick 250 · Aaron Frost · OT · rank 249
They paid sticker price for Aaron Frost in No. 250, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R7.39 · Pick 257 · Xavier Thomas · DE-EDGE · rank 255
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Thomas. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
