Boards are made to be trusted, and the Chargers shredded theirs for Jaylan Ford. He came off 39 spots early, and the room will hear about it. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Hardy falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 9th overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Troy Franklin in the 37th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A wild overpay on Christian Jones in No. 104, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They read the board right and Trey Benson was the payoff at pick No. 109. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Roger Rosengarten. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached a country mile for Jaylan Ford at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Daequan Hardy at Round 7, Pick 5 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They did well to land Sheridan Jones in No. 238, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tyler Owens at the Round 7 slot is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
No drama and no debate, Jalen Green went about where he belonged in slot 253. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
