There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Packers started one anyway for Eric Gentry, 32 picks ahead of schedule. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback, wide receiver and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. However the rest shakes out, Melton at that price is a win they earned. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Kamren Kinchens in pick 41 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Edgerrin Cooper in the 57th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Nice patience on Cooper Beebe, who had no business lasting to pick No. 88. The roster fit checks out.
They talked themselves into Leonard Taylor III at No. 90, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bucky Irving. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A want over a need in the Round 4 slot: Cole Bishop adds a safety while quarterback, wide receiver and other spots keeps waiting.
They robbed the room for Max Melton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jaylen Wright in the 135th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Christian Jones in Round 6, Pick 28. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A premium they did not need to pay, J.J. Weaver a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Eric Gentry at the 219th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They paid up for Dwight McGlothern at slot 246 when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
