The phones were a trap the Chargers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
The whole projection now runs through Caleb Williams; hit there and everything else looks smarter. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Brooks reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not. Frazier at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left interior defensive lineman open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 1 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
In pick 5 they get a building block for the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid a round early for Jonathon Brooks in slot 45, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
They read the board right and Cooper DeJean was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Zach Frazier slipping to the 108th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Shemar Turner at No. 145. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Jordan Burch at pick No. 186, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They went early on J.J. Weaver in the 229th pick, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
