The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Packers reached some 97 spots for John Emery Jr., and value like that does not grow back.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. However the rest shakes out, Jacobs at that price is a win they earned.
Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback, tight end and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
Nothing to complain about; Kamren Kinchens went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Chris Braswell slid further than he should have, and slot 65 is lovely value for the edge rusher. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A wild overpay on Darius Robinson in the 88th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Ricky Pearsall here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A curious use of the 101st overall pick. Quarterback, tight end and other spots needed the pick; a safety in Jaden Hicks did not.
Cedric Gray in pick No. 125 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A minor itch, scratched.
They talked themselves into Jaylen Wright at the 135th overall pick, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Andru Phillips in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Circle this one: Curtis Jacobs at pick 203 is a fall that decides a draft. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
J.J. Weaver at No. 217 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Dwight McGlothern in the 219th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Omar Speights in Round 7, Pick 2. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
John Emery Jr. at slot 246 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
