Boards are made to be trusted, and the Chargers shredded theirs for Trey Knox. He came off 41 spots early, and the room will hear about it. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.
Moore at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 8 they get a cornerstone up front, reach and all. A real need, handled.
They talked themselves into Jackson Powers-Johnson at No. 40, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Bucky Irving in slot 72, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Rod Moore in Round 4, Pick 8 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Ashton Gillotte at the 145th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They will replay Zy Alexander at the 186th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A big swing on Trey Knox at pick 229, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
