The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Little to argue with here, and the A- says so.
The Wilson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
They will need James to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Drake Maye in pick No. 5, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Guyton at No. 34, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Brenden Rice in the 68th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Payton Wilson at pick 104 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jarrian Jones in slot 136 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They let Dadrion Taylor-Demerson come to them and pounced at the Round 6 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jawhar Jordan at Round 7, Pick 9 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jeremy James at the 256th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
