The Chargers clearly saw something nobody else did in Nathan Pickering, taking him 145 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Landing Polk that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 6th pick they get a red-zone target to build around at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Tyler Guyton in Round 2, Pick 4 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Chop Robinson went about where he belonged in pick 37. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jermaine Burton in No. 40 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Sedrick Van Pran. It fills a real need, too.
Ja'Lynn Polk slipping to the Round 3 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Trey Benson at par in Round 3, Pick 10, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
By-the-book stuff, Khyree Jackson at pick 102 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jaylin Simpson in slot 145 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A premium they did not need to pay, Michael Barrett a notch or two before his time. A minor need, but a need all the same.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Nathan Pickering in the Round 6 slot, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They talked themselves into Tatum Bethune at the 226th pick, and the board did not agree. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Nothing to complain about; Dwight McGlothern went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
