The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Carson Schwesinger, the No. 125 name on the board, sitting there at No. 248 like a gift left on the doorstep. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
They will need Oliver to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Adding Nico Collins by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 20th pick they get a featured back, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
A slide stopped in pick No. 51, with Tyler Booker worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: Jihaad Campbell at the 76th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dylan Fairchild at slot 85 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Steal is underselling it; Oronde Gadsden II at No. 168 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cam Skattebo at pick 170 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No drama and no debate, Nazir Stackhouse went about where he belonged in Round 5, Pick 36. It fills a real need, too.
Collin Oliver at the Round 6 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Kobe Hudson in Round 6, Pick 13 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Deion Burks in the Round 6 slot, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Chris Paul Jr. in the 195th pick, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Sonny Styles at the 199th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Aydan White well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
You do not let a linebacker like Carson Schwesinger reach No. 248 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
