The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Miller Moss, the No. 90 name on the board, sitting there at No. 210 like a gift left on the doorstep.
If McLaughlin pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
In the end it comes back to James Pearce Jr., and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 19 they get a premier pass rusher. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Deone Walker at the 30th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Colston Loveland in No. 52; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
By-the-book stuff, Aireontae Ersery at slot 62 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid sticker price for Malachi Moore in pick No. 74, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Danny Stutsman in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Ollie Gordon II at pick 93 is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board had Evan Stewart higher than the 110th overall pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Patrick Payton. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Xavier Nwankpa in No. 139 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They talked themselves into Davison Igbinosun at Round 5, Pick 14, and the board did not agree. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A reach for Bryson Nesbit in the 172nd pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Miller Moss in pick 210 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jason Henderson at slot 217 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Collin Oliver. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached into another round for Seth McLaughlin, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Deion Burks at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
