This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Carson Beck, the No. 42 name on the board, stolen at pick 108.
The Henderson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 14 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 6, where Deone Walker graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Isaiah Bond at the 41st overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Aireontae Ersery in the 43rd pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
By-the-book stuff, Dylan Fairchild at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No edge and no loss on Tyler Warren in slot 52; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board fumbled Shavon Revel Jr. all the way to No. 70, and they scooped it up. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Barrett Carter in pick 71 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Malachi Moore in slot 72 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 107 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Taking Carson Beck in Round 4, Pick 7 is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Ajani Cornelius is a better player than No. 112 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A straight-up fair deal on Jordan James at pick 116, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Bryson Nesbit. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Alfred Collins at the Round 7 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached into another round for Jason Henderson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A wild overpay on Collin Oliver in slot 227, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Marcus Mbow in pick No. 236 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They talked themselves into Seth McLaughlin at the 256th overall pick, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
