For all the boxes ticked, the Chiefs skipped the loudest one: running back is exactly as bare as it was. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They banked enough surplus on McCaffrey to cover a lot of smaller sins. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Xavier Legette in No. 42 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
By-the-book stuff, Kiran Amegadjie at the 64th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Jaden Hicks went about where he belonged in the 86th overall pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No edge and no loss on Khyree Jackson in Round 3, Pick 32; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor itch, scratched.
Sataoa Laumea in pick No. 132 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Ainias Smith at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A quiet steal in pick 159: Luke McCaffrey for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
AJ Barner in slot 173 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ty'Ron Hopper in slot 185. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They took Sam Hartman at par in pick No. 252, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
