Nobody else had John Emery Jr. anywhere near pick 219. The Packers did, by 124 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a press-man option on the boundary. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Devontez Walker in Round 2, Pick 9 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Edgerrin Cooper in No. 57 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
Nice patience on Christian Mahogany, who had no business lasting to slot 88. The roster fit checks out.
Leonard Taylor III at pick 91 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Javon Foster at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Malik Mustapha went about where he belonged in No. 135. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Michael Wiley is a better player than the Round 6 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Demani Richardson in slot 217 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
John Emery Jr. at pick No. 219 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Eric Gentry at pick 246 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
