This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Javon Baker, the No. 186 name on the board, stolen at No. 216. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They will need Watson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a ballhawk on the outside, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick 41 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They let Calen Bullock come to them and pounced at the 57th pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Edgerrin Cooper in slot 58 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jarrian Jones at No. 126 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jaylen Wright in the 168th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Christian Jones in Round 6, Pick 28, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Javon Baker in pick No. 216 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Nathaniel Watson at pick No. 243 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They will replay Tanor Bortolini at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
