Nobody else had Evan Williams anywhere near Round 5, Pick 33. The Packers did, by 63 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
Spending an early pick on linebacker with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The Taylor pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get an island corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper in pick No. 41 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Cooper Beebe in slot 58 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid sticker price for MarShawn Lloyd in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cole Bishop at Round 3, Pick 28 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A curious use of pick 126. Edge rusher, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Trevin Wallace did not.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Evan Williams well ahead of where he belonged. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Jacob Monk at the Round 6 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jalen Sundell at the 219th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A slide stopped in No. 245, with Trey Taylor worth more than the price. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They talked themselves into LaDarius Henderson at pick No. 255, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
