The rest of the league will want that one back. Ollie Gordon II tumbling to the Patriots in the 235th pick is a gift they did not have to think twice about.
They will need Nwankpa to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The phones were where this weekend was really won. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 16th pick they get protection for the quarterback, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
Aireontae Ersery at No. 39 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Deone Walker at pick No. 70, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Colston Loveland here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A quiet steal in pick 106: Danny Stutsman for less than the market said. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Xavier Nwankpa in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Clay Webb in the 221st overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jonah Monheim in slot 223. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They will replay Ollie Gordon II at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
