Chicago Bears

A sensible, unshowy class lands the Bears a B.

The Bears torched the value chart for Malachi Lawrence, taking him 28 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.

Landing Hunter that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.

The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.11 · Pick 43 · Malachi Lawrence · DE-EDGE · rank 71
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Malachi Lawrence well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.14 · Pick 46 · Anthony Hill Jr. · LB · rank 38
Anthony Hill Jr. in No. 46 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Emmanuel McNeil-Warren · S · rank 51
Good price on Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in the Round 2 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Lee Hunter · DT · rank 48
The board fumbled Lee Hunter all the way to pick No. 72, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.25 · Pick 89 · Ted Hurst · WR · rank 89
They took Ted Hurst at par in the 89th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Mike Washington Jr. · RB · rank 75
Mike Washington Jr. at the 95th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.16 · Pick 116 · Keylan Rutledge · OG · rank 114
Keylan Rutledge at the 116th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Max Llewellyn · DE-EDGE · rank 154
This one needs a full-page explanation: Max Llewellyn in slot 129, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · VJ Payne · S · rank 196
A wild overpay on VJ Payne in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · Zane Durant · DT · rank 179
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Zane Durant at pick 191. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.23 · Pick 239 · Nick Barrett · DL · rank 254
A reach for Nick Barrett in No. 239; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
