The phones were a trap the Commanders kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The board sounded every alarm, and the F is the fallout.
Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. If Wilson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Leaving offensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Clark pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with offensive lineman still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd pick they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
In pick 10 they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, T.J. Tampa went about where he belonged in pick No. 36. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach for Ja'Tavion Sanders in No. 40; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Payton Wilson this early at the 42nd overall pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Dylan Laube in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Kitan Oladapo slid further than he should have, and slot 181 is lovely value for the safety. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
De'Corian Clark in Round 7, Pick 3 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
