The Cowboys looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Jimmy Horn Jr. at Round 5, Pick 33 regardless, 127 picks early. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Walker. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a featured back, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Derrick Harmon at the 44th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jalon Walker in No. 76 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They talked themselves into Shemar Turner at pick No. 148, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A real head-scratcher, DJ Campbell in pick 168 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jimmy Horn Jr. at the Round 5 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached a country mile for Kobe Hudson at Round 5, Pick 34, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for Garrett Dellinger, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
PJ Williams in pick No. 209 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Thor Griffith at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
