Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Dolphins were there to profit. Tylan Grable, the No. 224 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 7, Pick 30. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 22 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on Chris Braswell in pick No. 55; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They let Zak Zinter come to them and pounced at the 124th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
A slide stopped in No. 125, with DeWayne Carter worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No drama and no debate, Jacob Cowing went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Erick All at the 127th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Malik Mustapha. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Circle this one: Johnny Dixon at Round 6, Pick 43 is a fall that decides a draft. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Michael Barrett in No. 248 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Tylan Grable reach Round 7, Pick 30 and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
