Kansas City Chiefs

A weekend that raised as many questions as it answered. The Chiefs get a C+.

The Chiefs spent real capital to be 24 picks early on Walter Rouse, and the board is going to hold them to it. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.

They will answer for taking OLB-EDGE early while tight end, quarterback and other spots went begging. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Jordan.

So much rides on Jermaine Burton that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.12 · Pick 44 · Jermaine Burton · WR · rank 49
No edge and no loss on Jermaine Burton in the 44th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 69
No drama and no debate, Brenden Rice went about where he belonged in slot 63. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 57
A slide stopped in Round 3, Pick 3, with Edgerrin Cooper worth more than the price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.31 · Pick 94 · Javon Solomon · OLB-EDGE · rank 108
A surprising call. With tight end, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent pick No. 94 on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not short of.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Kamal Hadden · CB · rank 138
They paid sticker price for Kamal Hadden in No. 131, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.25 · Pick 161 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 158
They did well to land Jaylen Wright in the 161st overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.35 · Pick 171 · Michael Barrett · LB · rank 183
A reach on Michael Barrett in the Round 5 slot; the board had better options right there. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.39 · Pick 175 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 197
Christian Jones at Round 5, Pick 39 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Jawhar Jordan · RB · rank 209
Jawhar Jordan in the 223rd pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.14 · Pick 234 · Walter Rouse · OT · rank 258
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Walter Rouse well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.18 · Pick 238 · Chad Lindberg · C · rank 260
A wild overpay on Chad Lindberg in pick No. 238, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.32 · Pick 252 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 242
Nice patience on Matthew Jones, who had no business lasting to the 252nd overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.34 · Pick 254 · Nathaniel Watson · LB · rank 240
Value with a capital V on Nathaniel Watson in pick 254, a genuine coup. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
