The Chiefs clearly saw something nobody else did in Matthew Jones, taking him 33 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a difference-maker at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Payton Wilson in No. 63 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy little value on McKinnley Jackson in the Round 3 slot, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Kamal Hadden at the 131st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jaylen Wright at pick 161 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They went early on Jordan Jefferson in slot 171, and the value did not follow. The roster fit checks out.
Christian Jones at the 175th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached a country mile for Matthew Jones at slot 209, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A conviction pick on Chad Lindberg at pick 252 that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
