The trade table was where it all came apart. The Patriots shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. Put together, it is a D.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They will answer for taking TE-EDGE early while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging.
Reaching for Irving left real value on the table behind him. The Sainristil steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th overall pick they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Tyler Guyton at the 34th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
A reach on Patrick Paul in pick 35; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Brenden Rice in pick No. 66 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Roman Wilson at Round 3, Pick 4 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Bucky Irving this early at slot 71. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A curious use of No. 90. Edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a TE-EDGE in Cade Stover did not.
Mike Sainristil in slot 104 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A reach for Ben Sinnott in pick 136; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Cedric Gray at par in the 137th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No drama and no debate, Javon Baker went about where he belonged in pick No. 182. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Kenny Logan Jr. at the 229th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
