Call it larceny. Jihaad Campbell sat on the board until the 171st overall pick, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes. They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher at a price that makes it sweeter.
Wyatt Milum in No. 33 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Shavon Revel Jr. at pick No. 34 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reasonable price with a little left over, TreVeyon Henderson in pick 65. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jalen Royals at the 76th pick is the proof. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jalon Walker in Round 3, Pick 17 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: LT Overton at the 93rd overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
T.J. Sanders at slot 103 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
Tre Harris at the 118th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Dylan Fairchild in pick 134, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Somehow Cam Skattebo was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 31, and they pounced on premier running back value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Taking Alfred Collins in No. 170 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for Jihaad Campbell here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Darien Porter at pick No. 178 for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A quarterback of that caliber at slot 187 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
The board fumbled Rylie Mills all the way to the 209th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
You do not let a wide receiver like Dont'e Thornton Jr. reach slot 247 and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
