New England Patriots

The Patriots robbed the room for Bassa. Final grade: A-.

Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jeffrey Bassa got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at Round 7, Pick 4.

The cost of the Walley reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. A whole weekend of picks and safety is somehow still a want.

In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.22 · Pick 22 · Tyler Warren · TE · rank 15
In No. 22 they get a mismatch in the passing game. A real need, handled.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Jalon Walker · LB · rank 20
Jalon Walker in the 43rd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Tyler Baron · DE-EDGE · rank 81
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tyler Baron. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Deone Walker · DT · rank 67
Deone Walker in pick No. 77 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.3 · Pick 104 · Dylan Fairchild · OG · rank 94
Dylan Fairchild slid further than he should have, and pick 104 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.8 · Pick 109 · Jaylin Noel · WR · rank 102
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Jaylin Noel. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.6 · Pick 143 · Cam Skattebo · RB · rank 105
Steal is underselling it; Cam Skattebo at the 143rd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Andres Borregales · PK · rank 157
The board fumbled Andres Borregales all the way to Round 7, Pick 1, and they scooped it up. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Jeffrey Bassa · LB · rank 131
Somehow Jeffrey Bassa was still sitting there in pick No. 220, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Justin Walley · CB · rank 288
Justin Walley at slot 238 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
