The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Cowboys reached some 120 spots for Taylen Green, and value like that does not grow back. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
Getting Carter where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 10 they get a load in the middle at fair value. A real need, handled.
In the 11th pick they get a rangy last line of defense. Need was not the driver here.
In pick No. 18 they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
The board had Omarion Hampton higher than the 35th overall pick, and the running back fell to them anyway. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Tyler Booker in pick 41 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A big swing on Charles Grant at the Round 2 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Gunnar Helm at slot 70 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Somehow Kaleb Johnson was still sitting there in pick 75, and they pounced on premier running back value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tory Horton in Round 3, Pick 14, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They will replay JT Tuimoloau at pick No. 106 for years; that is how good the value is. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A safety of that caliber at the Round 4 slot is the definition of value, full stop. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A reach on Daylen Everette in No. 114; the board had better options right there. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Taylen Green at the 152nd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board fumbled Barrett Carter all the way to the 170th pick, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Raheim Sanders in slot 209 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
