There is reaching, and then there is Drake Nugent at the 181st pick. The Chargers jumped the board by 29 and dared it to prove them wrong. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Jones falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Malik Nabers at pick 5 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ladd McConkey in Round 2, Pick 5. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid up for Blake Corum at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board had cheaper options than Matt Goncalves at No. 105, and it noticed. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid a round early for Theo Johnson in pick No. 110, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
They let Christian Jones come to them and pounced at slot 140. The roster fit checks out.
They reached a country mile for Drake Nugent at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, LaDarius Henderson well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reach for C.J. Hanson in pick 253; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
