The rest of the league will want that one back. Dwight McGlothern tumbling to the Packers in pick No. 202 is a gift they did not have to think twice about. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
It is not that Gray is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. If Gray pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 30th overall pick they get a double-digit-sack hope at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jordan Morgan in Round 2, Pick 9. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value with a capital V on Junior Colson in pick 58, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board had Mike Sainristil higher than pick No. 88, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Dominick Puni at No. 91 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A surprising call. With quarterback, wide receiver and other spots still to address, they spent slot 93 on Cedric Gray, a linebacker they were not short of.
James Williams at the Round 4 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They liked Jarrian Jones enough to skip the value, taking him in the 126th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Isaac Guerendo in No. 130, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Taking Mason McCormick in pick 169 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Dwight McGlothern in slot 202, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Michael Barrett in the 219th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Edefuan Ulofoshio slid further than he should have, and the Round 7 slot is lovely value for the linebacker. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They read the board right and Marcellas Dial was the payoff at the 255th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
