Call it larceny. Kendall Milton sat on the board until the Round 7 slot, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Reaching for Ford left real value on the table behind him. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Quantity was the play, for better or worse.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 24 they get an anchor for the offensive line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Fair-plus on Ricky Pearsall, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Max Melton at Round 3, Pick 30 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A straight-up fair deal on Trey Benson at the 94th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Matt Goncalves at pick 134 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Value said wait; Jaylan Ford in the Round 5 slot says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A tidy little value on Nathaniel Watson in the 213th pick, a step better than break-even. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A running back of that caliber at No. 226 is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jaden Crumedy in the 231st pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
A slide stopped in pick No. 242, with Ryan Cooper Jr. worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
