San Francisco 49ers

More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B to prove it.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The 49ers spent slot 148 on Zane Durant, a name the board had a full 26 spots lower. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

That Orange pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Chris Brazzell II · WR · rank 29
In pick No. 31 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.28 · Pick 60 · Gabe Jacas · LB-EDGE · rank 63
Gabe Jacas at the 60th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Domonique Orange · DT · rank 77
Circle this one: Domonique Orange at pick 95 is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Malik Muhammad · CB · rank 95
Malik Muhammad is a better player than the 106th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Bishop Fitzgerald · S · rank 117
Bishop Fitzgerald at Round 4, Pick 9 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Mike Washington Jr. · RB · rank 116
Mike Washington Jr. at the Round 4 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.27 · Pick 127 · Parker Brailsford · C · rank 124
Parker Brailsford in the 127th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Beau Stephens · OG · rank 152
A big swing on Beau Stephens at slot 129, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Isaiah World · OT · rank 141
A premium they did not need to pay, Isaiah World a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.38 · Pick 138 · Kaytron Allen · RB · rank 143
By-the-book stuff, Kaytron Allen at pick 138 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.39 · Pick 139 · CJ Daniels · WR · rank 138
They took CJ Daniels at par in the 139th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.8 · Pick 148 · Zane Durant · DT · rank 174
A real head-scratcher, Zane Durant in the Round 5 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.27 · Pick 167 · Eric Rivers · WR · rank 162
Good price on Eric Rivers in Round 5, Pick 27, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
