You can draft well and still miss the point. The Packers did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to edge rusher, which was the need that mattered most. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
The Bortolini pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Sundell.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a ballhawk on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
By-the-book stuff, Cooper Beebe at Round 2, Pick 9 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No edge and no loss on Payton Wilson in slot 58; it is a wash and a sensible one. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Nothing to complain about; Calen Bullock went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Zak Zinter in No. 91 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Javon Foster in the 126th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They talked themselves into Tanor Bortolini at pick 169, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nathaniel Watson at the Round 6 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Frank Gore Jr. at the 219th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Josh Proctor. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jalen Sundell at the 255th overall pick is the proof. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
