The Patriots did not so much draft Drew Kendall as overpay for him, 48 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
Landing Higgins that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value.
Matthew Golden at pick No. 38 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
TreVeyon Henderson at pick 69 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
By-the-book stuff, Ozzy Trapilo at No. 77 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Steal is underselling it; Jayden Higgins at Round 4, Pick 4 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Somehow Cody Simon was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Kyle Monangai in pick No. 217 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They robbed the room for Jason Marshall Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Drew Kendall at the 238th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
