Somebody in No. 135 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The 49ers sat still while Emmett Johnson, the No. 104 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Clark pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback, edge rusher and other spots.
Every board in the league had Stephens lower, and that gap is the story. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
Emmanuel Pregnon in pick No. 28 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No drama and no debate, Zachariah Branch went about where he belonged in pick 58. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kamari Ramsey at No. 99 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A tidy little value on Malik Muhammad in the 106th overall pick, a step better than break-even. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A conviction pick on Michael Trigg at the 107th pick that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
A curious use of slot 115. Quarterback, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; a safety in Bud Clark did not.
J.C. Davis at Round 4, Pick 17 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They jumped the gun on DeMonte Capehart, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A premium they did not need to pay, Isaiah World a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A big swing on Beau Stephens at Round 4, Pick 34, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Emmett Johnson at pick No. 135 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach on Kevin Coleman Jr. in pick 147; the board had better options right there. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Zane Durant at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board had cheaper options than Noah Whittington at No. 209, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
