New England Patriots

The Patriots lost the trade table, and the B tells the story.

Future A+

There is reaching, and then there is Dayon Hayes at the Round 7 slot. The Patriots jumped the board by 74 and dared it to prove them wrong. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 25
In slot 31 they get a difference-maker at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Josh Conerly Jr. · OT · rank 37
They paid sticker price for Josh Conerly Jr. in No. 38, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R2.17 · Pick 49 · Aireontae Ersery · OT · rank 48
Aireontae Ersery at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Tate Ratledge · OG · rank 69
A straight-up fair deal on Tate Ratledge at the 69th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Mason Taylor · TE · rank 78
Mason Taylor at the 77th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Jake Majors · C · rank 102
No edge and no loss on Jake Majors in pick No. 95; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.6 · Pick 145 · Kalel Mullings · RB · rank 113
Circle this one: Kalel Mullings at pick No. 145 is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.22 · Pick 161 · Cody Simon · LB · rank 129
You do not let a linebacker like Cody Simon reach the 161st pick and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R7.1 · Pick 219 · Zeek Biggers · DT · rank 230
Zeek Biggers at the Round 7 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.4 · Pick 222 · Dayon Hayes · DE-EDGE · rank 296
Dayon Hayes at the 222nd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.16 · Pick 234 · Kyle Williams · WR · rank 196
They will replay Kyle Williams at pick 234 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.22 · Pick 240 · Jabbar Muhammad · CB · rank 229
A slide stopped in Round 7, Pick 22, with Jabbar Muhammad worth more than the price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
