Kansas City Chiefs

A sensible, unshowy class lands the Chiefs a B.

The Chiefs spent real capital to be 45 picks early on Charles Turner III, and the board is going to hold them to it. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

That Simpson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The trade work was a quiet net positive.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.32 · Pick 32 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 27
In pick 32 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 38
Xavier Legette at Round 2, Pick 8 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.10 · Pick 110 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 105
Zak Zinter at pick No. 110 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.11 · Pick 111 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 122
Theo Johnson at slot 111 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.16 · Pick 116 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 133
Christian Jones in the 116th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.32 · Pick 132 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 135
A straight-up fair deal on Roger Rosengarten at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 125
Johnny Wilson at Round 4, Pick 35 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 145
They paid sticker price for Tommy Eichenberg in the 139th overall pick, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Jaylin Simpson · CB · rank 137
Jaylin Simpson is a better player than the Round 5 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Fabien Lovett · DL · rank 183
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Fabien Lovett. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Khristian Boyd · DL-EDGE · rank 177
No edge and no loss on Khristian Boyd in pick 173; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.32 · Pick 252 · Charles Turner III · C · rank 297
Charles Turner III at the 252nd pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
