The Patrick Payton selection is the head-turner. The Patriots reached 67 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Landing Muhammad that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
Zion Young at pick 31 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They read the board right and Gennings Dunker was the payoff at the 63rd overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nice patience on Ja'Kobi Lane, who had no business lasting to slot 115. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Michael Trigg at the Round 4 slot is the proof. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board fumbled Malik Muhammad all the way to No. 131, and they scooped it up. A minor itch, scratched.
Zane Durant at Round 5, Pick 37 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Patrick Payton in the 191st overall pick, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A big swing on Jimmy Rolder at Round 6, Pick 17, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ephesians Prysock at slot 202. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They robbed the room for Jeff Caldwell here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Le'Veon Moss at No. 212 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Jalen Stroman at pick 218 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach for Fa'alili Fa'amoe in the 247th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Alan Herron a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
