The real work happened on the phones. The 49ers fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
If Llewellyn pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Fields.
They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
Value with a capital V on A.J. Haulcy in Round 2, Pick 26, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Malachi Fields at No. 93 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Max Llewellyn. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jack Endries in the 129th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Dametrious Crownover at slot 133 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach on Kaytron Allen in pick No. 138; the board had better options right there. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board had cheaper options than Zxavian Harris at the 139th overall pick, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Jeff Caldwell at Round 6, Pick 8 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nice patience on Keagen Trost, who had no business lasting to No. 199. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A wild overpay on Eli Heidenreich in pick 221, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nothing to complain about; Thaddeus Dixon went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
