Boards are made to be trusted, and the Texans shredded theirs for Emery Jones Jr.. He came off 62 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring. Running back is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 21 they get a true top target at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 25th overall pick they get a building block for the line, reach and all. A real need, handled.
Alfred Collins at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Emery Jones Jr. this early at Round 2, Pick 30. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Lathan Ransom. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jordan James in pick No. 122. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Cody Simon in the 131st overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid up for Jaylin Smith at the 234th pick when waiting would have done the job. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
