There is conviction, and then there is this. The Eagles took Eugene Asante a full 41 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Spending an early pick on linebacker with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. However the rest shakes out, Lachey at that price is a win they earned.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 32 they get a centerfielder for the defense, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
The board had Jeremiah Trotter Jr. higher than slot 51, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A want over a need in the 64th pick: Payton Wilson adds a linebacker while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots keeps waiting.
A quiet steal in the 97th overall pick: Amarius Mims for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Khyree Jackson slipping to pick 137 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Frank Gore Jr. in Round 5, Pick 11, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Luke Lachey at pick 172 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Taking J. Michael Sturdivant in the 178th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Value said wait; Eugene Asante in the 253rd overall pick says they were not listening. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
