The Buccaneers torched the value chart for RJ Maryland, taking him 70 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They will answer for taking linebacker early while interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots went begging.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dani Dennis-Sutton. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jacob Rodriguez in the 77th overall pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Harold Perkins Jr. while clear needs at interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots sat open.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tacario Davis at No. 116 is the proof. The roster fit checks out.
Jeff Caldwell at pick No. 155 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Pat Coogan went about where he belonged in slot 195. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: RJ Maryland in pick No. 229, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
