The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
That Henderson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Adding Cade Otton by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
Brian Thomas Jr. at slot 37 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They liked Malachi Corley enough to skip the value, taking him in the 68th pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Dominick Puni in pick 103 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Tommy Eichenberg at Round 4, Pick 26 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jarrian Jones at pick No. 139 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Steal is underselling it; LaDarius Henderson at the 182nd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A tidy little value on Jase McClellan in No. 224, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They read the board right and Brian Ugwu was the payoff at Round 7, Pick 12. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
