After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Newton falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Every board in the league had Wiley lower, and that gap is the story.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
Drake Maye in No. 3 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
By-the-book stuff, Ja'Tavion Sanders at the 34th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kiran Amegadjie. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Fair-plus on Jalen McMillan, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They read the board right and Josh Newton was the payoff at pick No. 137. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid sticker price for Khristian Boyd in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They liked Jared Wiley enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 193. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No drama and no debate, Dominique Hampton went about where he belonged in the 231st pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
