The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Phillips pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Tyler Guyton at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They liked Malachi Corley enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 68. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
DJ James in pick No. 103 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A straight-up fair deal on Dallin Holker at slot 139, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
They let Andru Phillips come to them and pounced at the 182nd overall pick. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
A conviction pick on Marcus Harris at Round 7, Pick 4 that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid a round early for Matthew Jones in the 232nd pick, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
