The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
Barner at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 7 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get protection for the quarterback, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at the 38th pick, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Taking Roman Wilson in slot 107 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board had Justin Eboigbe higher than pick 139, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A premium they did not need to pay, Roger Rosengarten a notch or two before his time. The roster fit checks out.
The board fumbled Chau Smith-Wade all the way to the 182nd overall pick, and they scooped it up. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A linebacker of that caliber at the Round 6 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They robbed the room for AJ Barner here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jawhar Jordan in slot 232 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
