The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Haynes pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
They liked Xavier Worthy enough to skip the value, taking him in the 35th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Christian Haynes at pick 68 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nelson Ceaser at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They took Ben Sinnott at par in Round 5, Pick 3, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Roger Rosengarten at slot 182 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
By-the-book stuff, Daequan Hardy at the 224th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid sticker price for Blake Watson in No. 225, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No drama and no debate, Jeremy Flax went about where he belonged in the 232nd pick. The roster fit checks out.
