This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Kenneth Grant, the No. 26 name on the board, stolen at pick 107.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They are betting Thornton Jr. proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They will answer for taking edge rusher early while tight end went begging.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. More want than need.
They will replay Wyatt Milum at Round 2, Pick 2 for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Shavon Revel Jr. at No. 41 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Somehow Nick Emmanwori was still sitting there in slot 44, and they pounced on premier safety value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
The board fumbled Walter Nolen all the way to pick 65, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
Omarion Hampton at pick No. 72 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jalen Royals at the 73rd pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: Jalon Walker at the Round 3 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
T.J. Sanders in Round 3, Pick 29 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Dylan Fairchild in the Round 4 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Kenneth Grant at the 107th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 109 on Ashton Gillotte with tight end unsolved.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, TreVeyon Henderson in pick No. 114, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Steal is underselling it; Alfred Collins at slot 117 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
You do not let a wide receiver like Tez Johnson reach the 118th overall pick and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jaxson Dart in No. 130 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A big swing on Dont'e Thornton Jr. at No. 144, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Cam Skattebo in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A quarterback of that caliber at the 189th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
