The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: KeAndre Lambert-Smith, the No. 193 name on the board, sitting there at No. 240 like a gift left on the doorstep. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
If Gadsden II pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Myles Garrett leading the way.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
No drama and no debate, Benjamin Morrison went about where he belonged in slot 38. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A slide stopped in pick 67, with Alfred Collins worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tre Harris in No. 69 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Donovan Jackson in the Round 3 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A need, and now a little less of one.
Oronde Gadsden II at pick No. 105 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Smael Mondon Jr. in Round 5, Pick 6 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A running back of that caliber at the 219th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Clay Webb at the 222nd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking KeAndre Lambert-Smith in Round 7, Pick 22 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
