The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Dolphins reached some 100 spots for R.J. Oben, and value like that does not grow back.
On value alone, Sabb makes the weekend a net positive. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
So much rides on Malaki Starks that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th overall pick they get a two-high chess piece at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
They reached into another round for Donovan Jackson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Kyren Lacy in slot 98 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Mason Taylor at Round 3, Pick 35, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Circle this one: Jake Majors at pick No. 115 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Smael Mondon Jr. in No. 149 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
They barely believed it either: Keon Sabb still on the board at No. 156. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Deion Burks well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They will replay Jamon Dumas-Johnson at slot 231 for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R.J. Oben in pick No. 251 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
