They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. They will need McCarthy to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get the arm they will build around, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Xavier Worthy at pick 34 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They took Patrick Paul at par in the 41st pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Fair-plus on Kingsley Suamataia, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Payton Wilson in Round 3, Pick 4 is fair value, right on his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A reach on Max Melton in the 103rd overall pick; the board had better options right there. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
By-the-book stuff, Dallin Holker at pick No. 139 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Cedric Johnson in the Round 5 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good price on Jase McClellan in slot 224, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A straight-up fair deal on Kedon Slovis at the 235th pick, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
