The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, the No. 198 name on the board, in pick No. 231.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.
The veteran additions, DaVon Hamilton chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Troy Fautanu at the Round 2 slot is the proof. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board fumbled Keon Coleman all the way to the 54th overall pick, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board had T.J. Tampa higher than pick 57, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They let Javon Bullard come to them and pounced at the 68th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They did well to land Cade Stover in No. 89, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Khyree Jackson adds a cornerback and leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots untouched.
Jalen McMillan at Round 4, Pick 8 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing MarShawn Lloyd in pick No. 114. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Isaiah Adams slid further than he should have, and slot 139 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. The roster fit checks out.
Tommy Eichenberg in the 148th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Layden Robinson at pick 179 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Johnny Dixon in No. 200, plain and simple. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Julian Pearl is a better player than Round 7, Pick 5 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at the 231st overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Steal is underselling it; Tyler Owens at the Round 7 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
